- 解釈：灯台は、灯火を載せる燭台（しょくだい）。周囲を明るくするが、直ぐ下は影になって暗い。同様に自分の身近な事はかえって見落とし勝ちで分からないものである。
- Literal：It is dark in the bottom of a lighthouse.
- Interpretation：He does not understand of him that it is familiar. The darkest place is under the candlestick.
- 類義：家の中の盗人は捕まらぬ。己に瞼（まぶた）は見えぬ。知らぬは亭主ばかりなり。提灯持ちの足下暗し。灯台、人を照らし己を照らさず。
