◇大昔、動物がついに人への我慢を切らした。 At last, ancient times and an animal have run out of endurance to a person. 動物を狩り殺しても、その一部しか食べず、あとは腐るままにする。 Even if an animal is hunted and killed, a person does while going bad after eating only its part. 川や湖で魚を捕っても、その骨を火や水に放り投げる。 Even if a fish is caught at a river and a lake, a person throws the bone to the fire and water. 人を生き延びさせるために犠牲になることに合意した動物たちに感謝する心を無くし、動物が少なくなっても、狩りを続けたからだ。 The mind which is appreciated to the animals which agreed that it'll be sacrifice was lost to make a person survive. That's because the hunt was continued even if an animal became little. そこで動物たちは、対策を決めようと会議を開いた。 So animals held a meeting in order to decide a measure. 人に戦争を仕掛けようという意見も出たが、熊が「弓矢を持つ人間には勝てない」と止めた。 The opinion which will prepare a war for people was also given. A bear, "That can't win against man with a bow and arrow.", it was stopped. 話し合いの末、人に病いを送って懲らしめることにした。 That decided to send a disease to the person and punish as a result of the discussion. 鹿は関節痛やリューマチ、頭痛を、鳥は腹痛を、と動物たちは様々な病いを人にもたらした。 A deer is arthritis and a rheumatism headache. A bird is a stomachache. Animals brought various diseases to people. しかし、病いにかかり苦しみ出した人の姿に、動物たちは哀れを感じた。 But animals felt pitifulness in the form of the people who have begun to have a disease and suffer. そこで、一部の人たちの夢に出て、病いにかかった理由を告げ、癒しをもたらす歌を教えることに決めたのだった。 So animals have decided to go out to some people's dream, tell the reason that it took for a disease and tell the song which brings cure. 動物たちは、薬となる植物の見つ方や、動物のように裸になって這いつくばって入り、心身を清めるスウェット・ロッジの儀式も教えた。 Animals told how to find it the plant which becomes medicine and a ceremony in a sweat lodge (It was the nude like an animal, and it crawled and entered, and a mind and body was purified.) to people. 既に送られた病いから人は逃れることができないが、動物に夢で習った歌を覚えている癒し人の助けを借りれば、人は病いから立ち直ることができるようになった。 People can't escape from the disease sent already. But when receiving the aid of "cure person" which remembers the song learned from an animal by a dream, people could recover now from a disease. 病いを送った動物を真似て踊り、その許しを乞えば、動物は人を癒してくれる。 When people imitate the animal which sent a disease, dance and request the leave, an animal heals people. そして癒された人が狩りのしすぎを慎み、死んでくれた動物を丁寧に扱い続ければ、病いはぶり返さない。 And when healed people keep being careful of too much doing hunt and treating the animal which died with care, it does not return for disease. 人は粗末に扱った動物から、懲らしめとして、病いを送られ、同じ動物から病いを癒す術も授かったのだ。 ‐ クリー族の伝説 The disease was sent to the people as the punishment from the animal treated shabbily.
